I’ve been canning for a few years now to preserve my garden produce and seasonal fruits and vegetables from the grocery store. Having a well-stocked pantry of healthy home canned goods helps me avoid buying fruits and vegetables during the off-season when they can be expensive. Gardening is a cheap way to put healthy and delicious food on the table. You can usually purchase seeds and other gardening supplies such as fertilizers and trowels from Dollar Tree in the spring. This year I only paid $0.25 per package of seeds I bought. You invested in raised beds, an irrigation system, and a rotary machine last year, but you don’t need expensive tools to get started. You can set up your own garden very cheaply and start reaping the savings of growing your own food right away.
In my experience, it is impossible to eat all the fresh produce that comes out of a large garden on your own. You’ll likely need to find a way to preserve leftovers so you can enjoy them year-round. Canning isn’t the only way to preserve your garden’s harvest, but it’s one of the cheapest. Freezing fruits and vegetables requires your freezer to run constantly, which increases your utility costs. Freeze dryers cost over $2000 and also consume electricity.
You have to heat your canner on the stove in order to process the energy consuming jars. But once cans are closed properly, you can safely store them at room temperature. So you don’t have to turn on any devices to keep it cool. You’ll have to buy canners and some canning jars to get started, but you can often find them at a thrift store at an affordable price. You will also need new canning lids each year unless you buy reusable lids. But the cost is negligible as it is less than $5 for 12 packages.
Canning is my favorite food preservation method, not only because it’s affordable, but also because it allows me to create specialty items like jams and jellies at a lower cost.

When you can, find a safe recipe and follow it exactly to prevent foodborne illness. Home-canned items can develop botulinum toxin, which causes severe illness or even death when ingested. Fortunately, there are plenty of really tasty safe canning recipes out there. You can make a lot of delicious sauces, jellies and jams like apple butter, cranberry relish, and peach sauce. You can also plain vegetables, fruits, and meats so you can add them to recipes later.
But my favorite way to use the canned is to make delicious specialties that cost me an arm and a leg at the grocery store. I can make amazing condiments like candied jalapeños and cornflakes for a fraction of the price to season staples like beans and rice.
Helps me avoid buying out of season products
When the produce is out of season, it is much more expensive because it has to be shipped from a remote farm. But thanks to my ample supply of canned goods, I don’t have to buy out of season produce in the winter. I can simply open a jar of corn and enjoy the sweet taste of summer even when it’s snowing outside!
Although grocery stores sell canned goods, canned vegetables at home taste much better, whether you get your produce from your garden or the store. If you’re shopping at the supermarket, the key is to get fruits and vegetables in season when they are the cheapest.
Last week, I was able to get a blackberry for $0.75 a pint by combining a store sale with an Ibotta discount. I ate some fresh and used the rest to make delicious, low-sugar blackberry jam. I save it for spreading on toast in the winter when fresh fruit can be pricey.
It prevents me from ordering a Takeout
Preparing all of your produce and getting it ready for canning takes a lot of work. But once the cans are stored in your closet, it’s super easy to grab a meal together. You can squeeze soups and stews that are basically meals into a jar. All you have to do is throw it in a saucepan, heat it up and serve.
Having these convenient meals on hand makes it easier for me to avoid ordering junk food. They give me a quick way to have dinner at the table on the nights when I’m too tired to cook a big meal from scratch.
