Some people speculate that this is just a way to weed out underperforming employees, but there is actually a more logical explanation for why Musk would send an email like this.

The main reason is that Tesla is facing a serious cash crisis. The company has been burning money at an alarming rate, and it needs to start generating revenue ASAP. Getting employees back to work is the best way to do that.
